Victoria and the Rogue

I think that I should just pick a theme for reading this year. And that theme is...(drumroll)...historical fiction! What a surprise. Today's book is Victoria and the Rogue by Meg Cabot.

Now I absolutely adore Meg Cabot. She has a spunky, quirky writing style. Unlike everybody else who reads her, I haven't read the Princess Diaries series. I started with the Mediator series, which features a ghost butt kicking heroine—it's pretty fun. Then I read several of her YA stand-alone novels. Devouring her historical fiction YA novels was a natural progression.

In Victoria and the Rogue, Victoria is a 16-year-old, know-it-all, I could totally run your life better than you do, heiress. We first see her on her way to England from India, where she lived her entire life up until this point. On the ship to England she meets a viscount who she, predictably, falls in love with and she also meets a gentleman and rogue who she, also predictably, detests at first sight. They fight throughout the voyage and this bickering continues in England where they often cross paths.

Their love story—and no this is not a spoiler because it's obvious from the beginning to anybody with a brain—is one of those love/hate, Elizabeth Bennet/Mr. Darcy ones. Honestly, those are my favorites. I love the angst and turmoil, and that moment where they fall from hate to love, or realize that there was never hate but love. Victoria's exploits in England are humorous and spirited, though somewhat unlikely, and the ending is a natural progression and rather satisfying.

All in all, a great book. Score another one for Meg Cabot.
